General information

About the treatment

Teeth grinding often occurs during sleep without you being aware of it. Over time, the pressure and friction can cause excessive wear or damage to the teeth. An occlusal splint, also known as a night guard, helps protect the teeth and reduce further wear.

The splint is a removable appliance made from clear acrylic and is worn over the upper or lower teeth, usually at night.

Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth, after which TANDZORGLAB will produce a custom-made splint. We pay particular attention to the fit to ensure that it is both secure and comfortable to wear while sleeping.

On average, an occlusal splint lasts around one to three years. Its lifespan depends largely on how intensely you grind or clench your teeth. If you apply a lot of pressure, the occlusal splint may wear down more quickly.

Clean your occlusal splint every day to help prevent the build-up of bacteria and deposits. Rinse it with lukewarm water and gently clean it with a toothbrush. If needed, you can use a small amount of mild soap.

Never use hot water, as this can cause the occlusal splint to lose its shape.

Your occlusal splint may feel slightly unfamiliar at first, as if there is something new in your mouth. Most patients adjust to it within about five days.

The occlusal splint should not cause pain. If it does, please contact your dentist so the fit can be checked and adjusted if necessary.
